How Akerele Is Reshaping Lagos Taskforce Operations

...Inside the intelligence-driven strategy, swift response initiatives and leadership approach strengthening public safety and enforcement across Lagos State.

By Temidayo Babalola

As Lagos continues to grow as one of Africa's largest commercial and economic hubs, the demand for effective enforcement and public safety has become increasingly critical. Against this backdrop, the Taskforce has intensified efforts to combat environmental offences, remove illegal road obstructions, enforce traffic regulations and support other security agencies in maintaining law and order.

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit (Taskforce) has emerged as one of the most proactive enforcement agencies in Nigeria, with its intelligence-driven operations, rapid response mechanism and people-centred approach drawing attention as a model that aligns with modern community policing principles.

At the centre of this operational transformation is the Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, whose leadership has continued to redefine enforcement through professionalism, strategic planning and prompt responses to security and environmental challenges across Lagos State.

In recent months, the agency has recorded significant successes in tackling environmental offences, illegal commercial motorcycle operations, street trading, traffic obstruction and other activities capable of threatening public peace and security. The Taskforce has also maintained swift responses to security concerns, helping to improve public confidence in law enforcement.

These operations is a leadership style that places emphasis on intelligence gathering, strategic deployment of personnel, operational discipline and rapid response to emerging security concerns. Under Akerele's watch, the agency has continued to carry out enforcement operations aimed at restoring sanity in identified black spots while ensuring that officers operate within the provisions of the law.

One of the defining features of the current administration is the emphasis on collaboration. The Taskforce has continued to work closely with the Nigeria Police Force, the Lagos State Government and other security and emergency agencies to improve operational effectiveness and respond promptly to situations that threaten public peace and safety.

The agency's operational capacity recently received a significant boost when the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) donated bulletproof vests, ballistic helmets and other protective equipment to the Taskforce. The donation reflects continued institutional support for the agency's role in safeguarding lives and property across the state.

Presenting the equipment, the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the LSSTF, Dr. Ayodele Ogunsan, stated that the intervention was part of the Fund's commitment to strengthening security institutions through logistics, equipment and operational support. According to him, the protective gear is designed to improve officers' safety and operational readiness while enhancing their ability to respond effectively to emergencies and public order situations.

Receiving the equipment, CSP Akerele expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Security Trust Fund for its sustained partnership, noting that the donation would further improve the welfare, confidence and operational efficiency of Taskforce personnel.

Beyond enforcement, observers say the agency has continued to place greater emphasis on professionalism, discipline and accountability. Officers are expected to conduct themselves responsibly while carrying out their duties, with leadership focusing on improving public confidence in the agency through lawful and coordinated operations.

Security analysts have also observed that many of the Taskforce's recent operations reflect principles commonly associated with modern community policing, including intelligence-led deployment, collaboration with relevant stakeholders and proactive interventions aimed at preventing disorder before it escalates.

Although the challenges associated with managing a rapidly growing megacity remain significant, the Lagos State Taskforce continues to adapt its strategies to meet emerging security and environmental demands. Through sustained enforcement activities and coordinated operations, the agency remains an important component of the Lagos State Government's broader efforts to promote safer roads, cleaner public spaces and a more secure environment for residents.

With continued investment in personnel, equipment and operational capacity, the Lagos State Taskforce appears well positioned to consolidate on recent gains. Under the leadership of CSP Adetayo Akerele, the agency continues to pursue its mandate with renewed focus, contributing to the ongoing effort to strengthen public safety and effective law enforcement across Lagos State.
