Olalekan Gbenga Oso Marks 50th Birthday with Free Medical Outreach in Ogun Community
UK-based philanthropist, Olalekan Gbenga Oso, has marked his 50th birthday by providing free medical services to residents of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, transforming what could have been a private celebration into a large-scale humanitarian outreach.
In addition to medical care, participants were given essential medications and food items, helping to ease financial burdens that often prevent access to healthcare. A major highlight of the outreach was the provision of free eye examinations and corrective eyeglasses, addressing a critical but often overlooked health need in underserved communities.
Many beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the initiative, noting that improved vision would enhance their daily productivity and overall quality of life, particularly among traders, artisans and elderly residents.
Speaking at the event, Oso described the outreach as part of his longstanding commitment to giving back to society, noting that his foundation has supported vulnerable individuals for over a decade.
“I have always believed in giving back to society. Turning 50 is a milestone, and I felt my people should benefit from this celebration,” he said.
A native of Tigbo Olu in Ota, Oso said returning from the United Kingdom to celebrate his birthday at home had been a long-held aspiration.
As part of activities marking the milestone, he is scheduled to receive traditional honours. The Olota of Ota, Oba Abdulkabir Obalanlege, is expected to confer on him the title of Asiwaju Bobaselu of Awori Kingdom, while the Olowu of Owu Kingdom will also honour him with the title of Asiwaju Bobaselu of Owu Kingdom.
Oso attributed his philanthropic drive to his experiences abroad, noting that repeated visits home exposed him to gaps in healthcare access.
“Each visit opened my eyes to how many people are living with preventable health challenges. Something as simple as poor eyesight can disrupt a person’s livelihood,” he added.
Beyond healthcare interventions, the philanthropist disclosed plans to establish an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) training centre aimed at equipping youths with digital and vocational skills. He also outlined a quarterly empowerment programme to support small-scale entrepreneurs with funding to grow sustainable businesses.
Community leaders and stakeholders at the event commended the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful, particularly amid rising healthcare costs.
They noted that Oso’s intervention reflects a blend of compassion and strategic vision, with a focus on creating lasting social and economic impact.
For many beneficiaries, the outreach represented more than access to healthcare with it restored hope and reaffirmed a sense of community support in the face of ongoing challenges.
