As government intensifies effort to diversify the economy to a non-oil sector culture and tourism have been identified as viable areas to explore, for improved socio-economic development of the country.
Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun stated this at the 22nd Obaruwa Day Celebration, with the theme, "Mobilising the Youth to Promote Our Culture", held in Sagamu, noting that, the youth needed to be mobilized to drive the nation's economy to the desired height.
Governor Abiodun, who was represented by the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Oluwatoyin Taiwo said the theme of this year's festival was appropriate, as there was need to support the youth in arousing their confidence to take up leadership responsibilities and prevent our culture and tradition from going into extinction.
While calling on the community, political and religious leaders, Royal Fathers, as well as other stakeholders to engage the youths in cultural activities, so as to acquaint them with cultural heritage, he enjoined them to continue to promote and propagate the State’s indigenous culture to the world.
The State’s helmsman reiterated his government’s continued support to better the lots of the youth, with improved strategies, saying, an appreciable percentage of them have been gainfully employed, through the job portal launched at the inception of his administration.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman, Transition Committee, Sagamu Local Government, Hon. Olugbenga Banjo, said the event would open opportunities for socio-economic development of the community, advising the people to continue to promote their socio-cultural values and ensure peaceful co-existence in the area.
In his address, the Ewusi of Makun, Oba Timothy Akinsanya, lauded the youth for channeling their energy to engage in the control of traffic and participating in environmental sanitation at Awolowo market, commending Hon. Ademola Adeniran, representing Sagamu Constituency II, at the State’s House of Assembly for providing refuse collection trucks and aiding clearing of drainages across the community during the weekly and monthly environmental sanitation days.
He appealed to the government to construct overhead bridge at the Sagamu express junction, so as to reduce rate of accidents in that axis, as well as provision of a fire-fighting vehicle at the Akarigbo's palace, for easy access when the need arises.
