Stakeholders and policy makers in Ogun State have been called upon to give support to the welfare of children with disabilities in the State by coming up with policies and procedures that would enhance their learning and care.
Wife of the Ogun State Governor, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun made this call at the Policy Making Session held to round up the 4-Day Capacity Building Programme for Special Needs Caregivers at the Conference Hotel, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta.
Mrs. Abiodun said people must be moved by empathy and compassion for the children to be adequately cared for, noting that it was expected of all in the society and not just from their families and caregivers.
She said she was moved to tears by the condition she met the children when she first visited them, explaining that this informed her determination to take their welfare as one of her pet projects.
Mrs. Abiodun solicited the support of all policy making bodies in the State to cooperate with her office and the team she invited from the United Kingdom to assist in making her dream concerning the children, a reality.
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Sidi Osho earlier in her address said, the State would look more into the welfare of the children and that modern facilities to aid their learning would be provided up to the tertiary level.
In her contribution, the State Head of Service, Tpl. Amope Chokor said the recruitment exercise in the Ogun State Public Service had always considered people with special needs, noting that five of such people were employed in the last exercise.
She said she would further ensure that higher quota was allocated to them during any recruitment exercise, adding that they had been contributing meaningfully to the service and the development of the State.
The Chairmen, House Committees on Education, Health and Women Affairs, Honourables Ademuyiwa Adeyemi, Adegoke Adeyanju and Sikirat Ajibola, unanimously agreed to facilitate policies in support of children and adults with special needs in the State, saying they would also ensure strict implementation.
