Lagos Taskforce Slams ‘Coordinated Blackmail Campaign,’ Threatens Legal Action Over False Reports

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce) has condemned what it described as the deliberate recycling of outdated allegations aimed at damaging the reputation of the Agency and undermining the reforms currently being implemented within the organisation, TMnews report.

The Agency reacted to a recent online publication alleging misconduct by some of its operatives, describing the report as a malicious attempt to resurrect stale narratives that no longer reflect the present operational realities and institutional reforms within the Taskforce.

According to the Agency, while constructive criticism remains vital in a democratic society, it is troubling that certain bloggers and online platforms have abandoned professionalism and ethical journalism in favour of sensationalism, blackmail and traffic-driven reports published without proper fact-checking.

The Taskforce noted that the publication surfaced at a period when the Agency has continued to receive public commendation for its efforts in traffic control, environmental enforcement and crime suppression across Lagos State.

It stressed that the Lagos Taskforce has undergone significant reforms over the years through personnel retraining, improved operational monitoring, stricter disciplinary procedures and institutional restructuring introduced by the Lagos State Government and the Agency’s leadership.

The Agency stated that the current administration has prioritised professionalism, accountability, respect for human rights and improved public engagement, adding that officers found guilty of misconduct are regularly investigated and sanctioned in line with extant laws and public service regulations.

According to the statement, the sacrifices of dedicated officers working daily to maintain order across the state should not be undermined by what it termed “compromised bloggers” and individuals pursuing malicious agendas.

“The deliberate circulation of stale and misleading stories clearly reveals a malicious agenda targeted at discrediting the Agency and creating unnecessary public distrust. It is unfortunate that some online platforms now operate without recourse to fairness, balance and professional ethics expected of responsible journalism,” the statement read.

The Taskforce further expressed concern over the increasing spread of unverified online reports where allegations are presented as facts without efforts to seek clarification from affected institutions before publication.

It maintained that such practices contribute to misinformation capable of fueling public resentment against law enforcement agencies and weakening public confidence in government institutions.

The Agency reiterated that reforms within the Taskforce have continued to produce positive results, particularly in operational transparency, personnel conduct and public complaint resolution.

It also disclosed that officers are regularly subjected to ethical orientation programmes and operational reviews designed to ensure compliance with global best practices in civil enforcement operations.

Warning against further defamatory publications, the Taskforce disclosed that its legal department has been directed to closely monitor malicious reports and initiate legal proceedings against individuals or organisations found culpable of spreading falsehoods or distorted narratives against the Agency.

“The era where faceless bloggers and unprofessional platforms publish damaging falsehoods without consequences is gradually coming to an end. The Agency will henceforth explore every legitimate legal avenue to protect its reputation and the integrity of its officers against malicious attacks,” the statement added.

While reaffirming its commitment to lawful enforcement operations and professionalism, the Taskforce urged Lagos residents to disregard misleading publications circulating online.

The Agency assured Lagosians that it remains committed to enforcing environmental laws, maintaining public order and supporting the security architecture of the state in line with the vision of the Lagos State Government.
It also appealed to media practitioners to uphold the principles of responsible journalism through balanced reporting, objective engagement and proper verification of facts before publication.

The Taskforce reaffirmed its openness to constructive criticism, lawful accountability and genuine public scrutiny, while insisting that it would resist coordinated attempts to tarnish its image through misinformation and digital blackmail campaigns.
