By Temidayo Babalola

The atmosphere at Iko Gateway Grammar School, Idiroko came alive yesterday as the community held a football kickoff ceremony as part of the farewell and tribute events for the late traditional ruler, Oba John Olakunle Ojo Afiditi. The well attended sporting event was organized to celebrate the life, legacy and contributions of the revered monarch to the development of Ikolaje Idiroko and its people, TMnews report.

The novelty match featured two symbolic teams which are the Ikolaje Idiroko Ambassador All-Stars and the Ikolaje Idiroko Indigenous Team, both parading talented players from the community. The encounter, which drew large support from residents and football lovers, was filled with moments of excitement, friendly competition and emotional reflection.

The match was keenly contested, with both sides demonstrating impressive skill and teamwork. However, it was the Indigenous Team that broke the deadlock early in the game when Officer Kehinde Obanla found the back of the net, scoring what would eventually become the winning goal. Despite spirited efforts from the All-Stars to equalize, the Indigenous side maintained their lead until the final whistle.

Speaking after the match, community members described the event as not just a competition, but a unifying moment that reflected the love and respect the people shared for the late Oba Afiditi. They noted that the novelty match highlighted the monarch’s enduring legacy of promoting peace, unity, and youth empowerment through sports and cultural development.

The ceremony was graced by notable personalities and community leaders, including Hon. Deacon Esun Obanla, Hon. Bankole Joel (Agba Akin of Ikolaje Idiroko), Chief Mrs. Bamgboye Yemi, High Chief Samson Orobiyi, Prince Oje Afolabi, Mr. Samson Dada, Mr. Bamgbose Mosun, Mr. Ojuowo Tetede, Mr. Akapo, and Mr. Agbele, among others. Their presence added dignity to the event and further demonstrated the strong bond shared among the people of Ikolaje Idiroko.

As preparations continue for other farewell rites, residents expressed their commitment to preserving the legacy of Oba John Olakunle Ojo Afiditi, describing him as a bridge builder, peacemaker and father figure to many.
