PSC Subjects Over 400 Senior Police Officers to Promotion Exams, Insists on Merit and Character

56 CSPs Eyed for ACP Rank, 451 SPs for CSP; Commission Declares Exams Now Indispensable for Police Promotions

Abuja, Sept. 18, 2025 — The Police Service Commission (PSC) on Thursday subjected more than 400 senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force to promotion examinations in Abuja, reaffirming that merit, competence, and character will henceforth form the basis for elevation in the service.
The exercise saw 56 Chief Superintendents of Police (CSPs) recommended for consideration to the rank of Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs), while 451 Superintendents of Police (SPs) were lined up for possible promotion to Chief Superintendents of Police (CSPs).

The written examinations were presided over by Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, Honourable Commissioner representing the Judiciary, and DIG Taiwo Lekanu (rtd), fdc, Honourable Commissioner representing the Police and Chairman of the PSC Standing Committee on Police Affairs.

The Commission stressed that the new policy of mandatory promotion examinations was designed to ensure officers are mentally equipped to handle the complex demands of 21st-century policing in line with international best practices.

It added that Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) are expected to appear before the Commission on Friday, September 19, for their own round of examinations.

Speaking on the development, PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), mni, said the initiative reflects the government’s determination to build a new, professional, and dynamic Police Force capable of effectively protecting lives and property and tackling crime in all forms.

“Promotion will no longer be business as usual. We are determined to reposition the Nigeria Police Force to meet global standards. This reform will strengthen professionalism, discipline, and efficiency,” Argungu said.

He called on Nigerians to continue supporting the Police, noting that encouragement from the public would boost officers’ morale and inspire them to rededicate themselves to the service of the nation.
