The quest to explore the opportunities inherent in waterway transportation would be vigorously pursued by Ogun State Government, as it begins moves to collaborate with the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).
The Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, said this while welcoming the leadership of NIWA to the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, describing the engagement as very timely, as the present administration was already weighing its option on enhancing rail and waterways transportation, towards reducing the pressure on roads.
"The pressure on our roads today have become worrisome, we welcome you to our dear state and appreciate the dire need for us to collaborate in enhancing waterways development, as an alternative means of commuting people and goods safely to other part of the state.
"As a Gateway State, we pride ourselves as the entry point to the Country and as a result, we are poised to create viable partnerships with our stakeholders to bring succor to the people of the State", he stated.
Speaking on the proposed take-off of the Jetty at Iwopin, Ogun Waterside Local Government area of the State being facilitated by NIWA, the State Scribe said government was delighted with the project, maintaining that there was need for NIWA to assist in classifying the mode of commuting before the project finally takes off.
"On Waterways passage, we want NIWA to come up with the modalities that would improve commerce interaction within the host community and even beyond", he maintained.
