COVID-19 DELTA VARIANT: OGUN ASSEMBLY ADVISES RESIDENTS TO BE CAUTIOUS

In view of the recent discovery of the COVID-19 Delta variant ravaging some countries including Nigeria, the Ogun State House of Assembly has cautioned residents to be vigilant and adhere strictly to the necessary safety precautions in stemming the rapid spread of the third wave of the disease.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo issued the caution, during the plenary session at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, noting that it was important to further comply with all preventive measures, especially as the ‘Eid-Kabir’ celebration approaches.

Oluomo said the spike in daily cases of victims recorded in the last two weeks, particularly in the neighbouring State such as Lagos, required that all residents of the State should continue the use of face mask, maintain social distancing and do regular hand washing, among others.

In another development, Oluomo has lauded the intervention of the National Assembly, Federal and State Governments for securing the release of an activist and an indigene of the State, Dr. Kunle Garb, who was arrested and prosecuted by Benin Republic authority for allegedly resisting Benin’s encroachment on the Nigerian land at Igbokofin village in Yewa North Local Government Area.

Oluomo gave the remark in his response to the presentation of a member representing Yewa North II State Constituency, Wahab Haruna, who notified the Assembly of the recent release of the activist.

The Speaker, thereafter admonished the Federal Government through the Ministries of Interior, Foreign Affairs, and other concerned agencies, to step up strategies at improving on the security of residents of border communities with a view to curb a re-occurrence of such illegal detention.
