2020 WORLD DAY: OGUN COMMISSIONER, DR. TOYIN URGES NIGERIANS TO PROMOTE CULTURAL DIVERSITY

The Ogun State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Oluwatoyin Taiwo JP, FIIM has urged Nigerians, home and in diaspora to protect, preserve and promote the country’s cultural diversity in a bid to create a peaceful and sustainable development.

Honourable Taiwo gave this charges during a chat with journalists in Abeokuta, on the celebration of year 2020 World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, noted that the Day could not be properly celebrated due to the Covid-19 pandemic ravaging the world.

The Commissioner called for a deepened understanding on the values of cultural diversity, which he said could serve as a source of comfort and connection to live a more fulfilling intellectual, emotional, moral and spiritual life, saying ‘’developed countries all built their paths to development through upholding traditional values and cultures’’.

He noted that the day was set aside to promote culture and highlight significance of its different beliefs, as an agent of inclusion and positive change, stating that, ‘’it represents an opportunity to celebrate culture’s manifold forms, from the tangible to intangible, to creative industries and reflect on how these contribute to dialogue, mutual understanding, social, environmental and economic sectors for sustainable development.

Dr. Taiwo assured that the Prince Dapo Abiodun’s administration in the State was not resting on its oars, as its activities were geared towards the preservation and promotion of the people’s culture, urging citizens to play their parts to achieve the set developmental agenda.
