Lagos Taskforce Nabs Dismissed Operative Over Alleged Impersonation, Extortion

By Temidayo Babalola

The Lagos State Taskforce has arrested a dismissed operative, Yahaya Salami, popularly known as Adams, following the circulation of a viral video showing his apprehension by the agency’s operatives in Oshodi over alleged impersonation.

According to the agency, Salami, a former paramilitary operative attached to the Taskforce, was dismissed several months ago over alleged gross misconduct, including theft, use of a fake identity card, extortion of motorists and traders, and indiscipline.

Despite his dismissal, he allegedly continued to pose as a serving official of the agency, raising concerns about the possible misuse of the Taskforce’s identity and authority.

The arrest took place at Oshodi Bus Stop, Lagos, on Sunday, October 18, 2026, after previous attempts to track down the suspect reportedly proved unsuccessful.

The agency stated that its operatives approached Salami for questioning, but he allegedly declined the invitation and resisted arrest. The situation was subsequently brought under control through what the Taskforce described as effective tactical coordination and professionalism, with minimal force.

In a statement, the Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, clarified that the individual captured in the viral video was a former operative who no longer had any affiliation with the agency.

Akerele warned that impersonating law enforcement personnel was a serious concern capable of misleading members of the public and undermining confidence in legitimate law enforcement operations.

He said the arrest demonstrated the agency’s determination to prevent dismissed personnel and other unauthorised individuals from exploiting its name, identity and authority for unlawful purposes.

The Taskforce also highlighted its ongoing public enlightenment and sensitisation programmes across Lagos State’s 57 local government areas and local council development areas. The initiatives are aimed at promoting compliance with existing laws, maintaining order and enhancing public safety.

The programmes also include educating commercial motorcycle operators and other road users on traffic regulations, restricted routes and the dangers of driving against traffic, popularly known as one-way driving, including along the coastal road and other parts of the state.

The agency disclosed that the suspect was expected to be charged before a court of competent jurisdiction on Monday, October 19, subject to the completion of necessary procedures.

Akerele reiterated that the Taskforce would not tolerate impersonation or any unlawful conduct capable of bringing the agency into disrepute. He urged members of the public to remain vigilant, verify the identities of individuals claiming to be Taskforce officials and report suspicious activities through appropriate channels.

The chairman also called on journalists and other media professionals to uphold the principles of responsible journalism by verifying allegations, investigating claims and seeking responses from relevant parties before publication.

He emphasised that balanced and factual reporting was essential to preventing misinformation, ensuring fairness and sustaining public confidence.

The Lagos State Taskforce reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the law, protecting residents and preventing unauthorised individuals from abusing the agency’s name and authority.

The agency concluded with its public safety message: “See Something, Say Something.”
